RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
