Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
