Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
