The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
